Large Fish Wood Carving
Beautiful Hand carved Ironwood Fish Sculpture from Mexico
Approximately 19 inches tall. Mexican ironwood carvings is a handcraft that began with the Seri indigenous people of the state of Sonora. Ironwood comes from a Sonora Desert tree (Olneya tesota) commonly called Palo Fierro. It is a slow growing tree found in northwest Mexico and the southwest U.S. The Mexican government declared it protected in 1994. Although carving is still permitted, the scarcity of the wood has caused its price to rise and production to fall making existing pieces more valuable.
